Valencia CF's last win away to Atletico Madrid
A Joaquín brace earned the win in the 2010/11 visit to the capital
Games between Valencia CF and Atletico Madrid are historic fixtures in Spanish football, and one of the more memorable moments from such encounters came in 2010/11. In that meeting, at the Vicente Calderón, Joaquín scored a brace to help secure an away victory.
It remains the most recent win for Valencia CF away to Atletico Madrid. In addition, the team are yet to claim their first win at the Metropolitano since Los Colchoneros moved there.
In that 2020/11 Matchday 23 game, an Atleti side coached by Quique Sánchez Flores took the lead with a goal from José Antonio Reyes in the second minute. Shortly before the end of the first half, Joaquín equalised with his first goal of the game.
After the interval, Atletico Madrid had a chance to take the lead with a penalty, but Diego Forlán's spot kick hit the post.
Valencia CF's persistence was rewarded four minutes before the end of regulation time: Joaquín unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, leaving a young David De Gea in goal with no chance.
Valencia CF head to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for a 2pm Saturday kickoff on December 13th.
